I wrote “South Of The Border” in October of 2007. I finally got around to recording a demo of it in November of 2008. The song had ‘beach music’ written all over it from the lyric line to the 120 beats per minute tempo which just happens to be Shag tempo. Now if you’re not familiar with the terms beach music and Shag they refer to a style of music and style of dance that started in the Carolinas at places like Ocean Drive, South Carolina and Carolina Beach, North Carolina. The original recorded version was simply guitar, bass, and drums. I played the recording for my brother- in- law who is a beach music aficionado and a pretty darn good Shag dancer as well. He really liked the tune and in turn played it for Ted Keaton of the group Shaggie Maggie. Well, Ted liked it as well and thought it would be better suited with a larger arrangement, horns, keyboards etc. He put me in touch with John Barker who has his own studio and is a very good producer and arranger not to mention the author of “Summertime’s Calling Me” one of the biggest beach music songs of all time. John and I tweaked it and it was released on Craig Fleming’s DJ Sampler in March 2009. Tell me what ya think.
1. South of the Border

2. Seasons Greetings

4. My Father Was An Artist
5. Gulf Stream Dream
6. Nothin To Do With Nashville
7. It's O.K. John
8. Boogie Woogie Cookin
9. My Old Summertime
Gulf Stream Dream and My Father Was An Artist are songs I wrote and recorded at a little 8 track country studio in Bailey North Carolina In 1976. The studio had low ceilings with egg crates glued to them. As best as I can remember the performers other than myself are Jim Mitchell on drums, congas, and background vocals. Brenda Linton on piano and vocals, Byron Paul on bass , guitar, and background vocals. Bill Butler on keyboards, dobro, and backing vocals. And Carter Minor on harmonica and background vocals. Perhaps Brenda’s husband Tony played some guitar as well.
The Hudson Wedding Song and Seasons Greetings were written for the next Heartwood album that never was to be. They were recorded in 1975 as demos with an assistant engineer in studio B at the Sound Pitt recording studio in Atlanta Georgia. Incidentally, I wrote the Hudson Wedding Song for Robert Hudson and his soon to be wife Sherrill.
It’s OK John, Nothing To Do With Nashville, Boogie Woogie Cookin, and Keep On Tryin are for my next CD called Veteran. I’ll will post more as they are completed. It’s OK John is a tribute to John Lennon. Nothing To Do With Nashville is a look at the seamier side of Nashville, Boogie Woogie Cookin is just fun and lets me turn loose with my Tele. Keep On Tryin is my mantra.
Periodically I will be posting music I have written. The next batch will be from my Nashville sessions.
